Show Notes

Exactly a year ago, approximately April 2020, us here in the States entered a stay-at-home order in order to try and prevent the spread of Covid-19.  Meanwhile, professional sports around the country began taking measures to follow government orders and protect their players by either postponing seasons, or limiting their games in some form.  Because of sports closing during the pandemic, a group of us who share in being sport fanatics (especially for our local teams) got together to start an episode on the importance of Sports during the pandemic.  In that episode, we discuss how we will miss spending time watching and discussing it with family, friends, and co-workers, and though we understand athletes need protection from the virus, too, we figure this is a good break to dedicate time to finding new hobbies.  Overall in that episode, we figured that life-safety for all, outweighed our want to watch the athletes play for our entertainment.  In hindsight, we didn't think the pandemic would have extended over the period of a whole year.  Additionally, sports began re-opening throughout the year.  Little did we know that as important as we thought sports was in our life, a precedent of other issues took over and we began to re-think our priorities.

In this episode, we reflect on the year as it related to sports in the pandemic.  We talked about how our mindsets have shifted to other dedications, but how old habits die hard.  Sports, at least for us, is a mainstay and a community we enjoy belonging too.  Though you will hear throughout the episode how we realize sports may not be the strongest advocate for community and combating social issues overall.

Throughout this episode we started our conversation about how we used to believe--before the pandemic--how sports played a large role in being a unifier.  Especially for our country, sports brought everyone together regardless of gender, politics, and religion, to name a few factions.  Though as we have seen late into the year 2020, not only is the pandemic causing a lot of stresses, but many social and cultural issues have came to light that shifted a lot of our personal and world views.  We discussed how Sports have participated in the social movements and its effectiveness.  Overall, have our perspective on sports shifted away from a community builder, to just an entertainment vehicle?

In the end, whether sports still remains a large staple in our lives, or we outgrew its priority over the duration of the pandemic, it will still definitely be a large part of the media.  Sometimes people look to sports for inspiration, or an escape, but it goes to see if it can evolve to do much more in helping us relieve our stresses during these trying times.
